". . . Also my mother was an exceptional person ..and also she was very much devoted to her family. Not only to her children, but also to her sisters and brothers.

When her mother - Wanda Krajewska - died in 1923 - my Mother was a child of not yet 11 years old. But she was the oldest girl in the family so she had to replace her mother and to be a housewife at home - cooking for all in the family, washing, cleaning and even helping in the farm, however first of all she mothered her younger, much younger sisters. She brought Julia, Janina and Irena up. She cared for them - as their mother would do - until they grew up.

The children of Wanda Krajewska didn't have one but two stepmothers as Leon Ciarczynski remarried not once (as it is written in the "Aunt Janina" letter) - but twice! His second wife came from Warsaw but was very ill with tuberculosis, and died within a year from their wedding. She didn't care for children of Wanda Krajewska because all the time she was very weak and concerned about her own poor health.

When she died - Leon Ciarczynski married for the third time. The third wife of Leon Ciarczynski was a classical stepmother to Wanda Krajewska's children so there was again nobody to care for them except their oldest sister - Marianna.. - my mother. . . "

Noted events in his life were:

• Anecdote: 165 According to a letter written in 1982 by his wife, Marianna, Jan (Janek) "spent over five years in a war camp" during World War II.

• He served in the military September 1, 1939 to September 30, 1939 in Poland. 166,167 From October 1939 to March 1945 he was a prisoner of war in a German war camp. The following narrative was written by his daughter, Barbara, on October 22, 2006:

My father left his home and family at the beginning of May, 1939. Mietek [RMJ note: Mieczyslaw] - the youngest of his 3 children then was a baby of 4 months old.

At first my father was called to take part in maneuvers as Poland had enough reasons to suspect that German army would attack them. The general mobilization followed very soon and my father got no chance to see his family - until six years later - as directly from the maneuvers he was sent to the front.

On the 1st September, 1939 - he was in a rank of an old-shooter (a private - specialist on a heavy machine gun) but within two weeks he got raised to a corporal in the Polish Army. He served - so long as it was possible - meaning: till the capitulation of Poland - in the infantry of the Modlin Army which was a part of the Polish Army (http://www.1939.pl/organizacja/polska/index.html).

My father operated ckm - a heavy machine gun; very heavy indeed but apparently still portable...The soldier who helped him to carry this gun survived the war, too .. and remained my father's friend for many years afterwards. His name was Wieczorek.

The Polish Modlin Army was appointed to guard Polish borders with East Prussia which was approximately 120 kms North from Warsaw. My father served in the 20th Division of Infantry and at the very beginning of September, 1939 in the neighborhood of Mlawa they fought a very heavy battle. The battle by Mlawa was one of the first and the greatest battles of September, 1939 and my father took part in it.

They tried very hard to stop the German forces advancing towards the Modlin Fortress (approx. 40 kms from Warsaw) where the headquarters of Modlin Army were located.

After having been defeated by Mlawa - Polish soldiers retreated in the direction of the Narew river fighting with German troops which followed them. Then my father got wounded.

In the Modlin fortress where he was brought to - they took the bullet out of his back - but he had hardly any time to recover as German troops surrounded the fortress and my father joined his soldiers and fought very heavy battles again.

Polish soldiers defended Modlin Fortress to the bitter end. Last days of September, however they had to give up. They surrendered on 29th September. Most of the soldiers were killed, but those who somehow survived got imprisoned and placed in the war camps.

My father was brought to the North East Prussia where in the neighbourhood of the place called Bartenstein - now Bartoszyce - he was kept for 5 years and 3 months. Five years and three months of great misery: of living in a stable, sleeping on a concrete, of working very hard from dawn till sunset, of starving while finding a raw potato or an onion in the field meant a lot to him, and ... of being tortured as beaten he was almost every day.

When in April, 1945 he came back home - he was a wreck. Doctors said he had no more than 4 - 5 months to live.. but he lived 51 years ! Very deep scars caused by bullets and by tortures - remained on his body till the end of his days.

I was born in December, 1950 and wasn't even aware of the war until I went to school. Some wounds on the back of my father were so deep that I could easily hide my childish palm there. I remember how greatly upset I was then, how frightened, and how very angry at those who "had harmed my pa..." - as I was saying then through my tears.

To my daughter Carole Kaminski-Burghardt

Just in case.

My strong box is in the cedar chest, the keys to the chest are in my dresser drawer top,and the keys to the chest is hanging near the door chime. I have a few bucks in the chest, that will all be yours. Iam putting in this letter a few withdrawal slips that you can fill in,If and when the time comes you can go to the bank and take it all out for yourself. On one of the slips I have put in the date, which I have made out today, and the other slip I didn't date it,maybe it will be better I don't know. There is also a few bucks in my clothes closet,in a budget book, and a few bucks in the apartment on the left.

There is one thing that you will have to do to earn all of this,I just might leave one of these days, then you will know what you have to do. YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE MY LITTLE FRIEND ( ARDO ) and take good care of her,and Iam pretty sure that you will do just that. In this chest are also Insurance Policys, two are for you,one is paid up and there is also one Policy that is mine, and that is also paid up a very long time. My diamond ring is also in the cedar chest & watch, that will also be yours. There are a lot of old suits that won't fit Jackie,so I am hoping that you will give them to Lukie, also the winter coats.

Your Daddy.

(Signed: Gus Kaminski)

Or maybe there will be a better way befor anything should happen to me. With these slips all you will have to do is,put the date and the amount you want to take out. As for the number of the book,I did tell you where it is. I also have the deed from the cemetery,I also would like being buried with mamie and Marilyn, that is when I go.

As for my clothes, well I know that they are to big for Jackie,so you give all my clothes to my sister and I am sure that she could have them fix over for Lukie, and the rest of the furniture, sell it all, but keep the rocking-chair for yourself,as when you get older, you will like rocking yourself to sleep ? I also have a lot of tools,in the closet and in the celler, you can do what ever you want with them,I know that they will come in handy as you own your home.I don't know if Jackie knows how to use them HA,HA. Well that is all that I can think of--

(Signed: Gus Kaminski To my Daughter Carole)

Following is the English translation of the original Russian Birth and Baptismal Certificate for Halina Stanislawa Kaminski which I received from "RootsPoland.com":

Birth & Baptism Record for Halina Stanislawa Kaminska

Hause # 100 in Kraszewo-Gaczulty.
It happened in Raciaz the fifth /the eighteen/ of July the one thousand nine hundred eleventh year, in the second hour afternoon, (that) Jozef Kaminski, blacksmith residing in the village Kraszewo-Gaczulty, age twenty eight, presented himself personally in the presence of the witnesses: Jan Olszewski thirty eight years, and likewise Jozef Kedzierski, twenty eight years, both farmers in the village Kraszewo-Gaczulty, and showed us an infant of female gender, declaring that it was born in the village Kraszewo-Gaczulty yesterday [on the seventeenth of July, 1911] at eight o'clock afternoon, by his lawful wife Zofia né Krajewska , age twenty three. To this infant, through Holy Christening performed this date by the priest Edmund Waltorski [missionary vicar], was given the name Halina Stanislawa, and the godparents were: Jan Olszewski and Wanda Ciarcin'ska. This record was read to the informant and the witnesses, all illiterate, and then signed by us. Administrator for parish Raciaz in name of State; priest Ludomir Solski.

Christening Notes: Halina's godparents are listed on her birth/baptismal certificate as Jan Olszewski, godfather, and Wanda Ciarczynska (ne Krajewska), godmother.

Jan Olszewski thirty eight years, and likewise Jozef Kedzierski, twenty eight years, both farmers in the village Kraszewo-Gaczulty, are listed as witnesses to the baptism of Halina.

Death Notes: According to the Certificate of Death, Arline died at 8:35pm on April 16, 2003 at the Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York.

General Notes: Halina immigrated to the United States when she was an infant. She was accompanied by her mother Sophie, and her brother Gustaw. They were processed through the immigration center on Ellis Island, New York.

Halina played the piano as a child.

On October 11, 1944 she received a "Certificate of Literacy" from the University of the State of New York. The examination took place at Public School 40 in Brooklyn, New York. She apparently needed this certificate to become a registered voter.

According to the Certificate of Baptism issued from Raciaz, Poland in November 12, 1956 Alina's name was "Halina Stanislawa Kaminska". Based on this information, Arline (as she was known to her family) was probably an Americanized version of Halina. Mary could very well have been her confirmation name.

In the 1920 Federal Population Census taken in Watervliet, Albany County, New York, Halina was listed under the name "Helen".

In July of 1935, she applied for a certificate of her arrival in the United States from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The fee was $2.50. 100,126,206
